Pre and postharvest Disease Maanagement Workshop
This full-day workshop will present scientifically-based and updated knowledge on major pathogens and diseases threatening the sustainability of production and storage of pome fruit in the Pacific Northwest.
Learning Objectives: Participants will:
Acquire new knowledge about the major diseases of apple
Know the risks of each major disease
Understand the way(s) the causal agents infect the flowers and the fruit
Understand the timeline of infections from bloom to harvest and during storage
Acquire up-date knowledge about best management practices pre and postharvest
Better understand the risks of fungicide resistance development to existing fungicides and strategies to reduce risks

MODULE 1: Know the foes and their dynamic

-Overview of the biology of major pathogens and their description
Review of major diseases to consider in order to optimize packout

-Infections timeline pre and postharvest
Sources of major preharvest infections
Timeline of infections from bloom to harvest and links with management
What happens once the fruit is picked and stored

MODULE 2: Best Management Practices

Current disease management tactics and needed improvement
Think management early
Preharvest cultural practices and chemical control
Choose the right chemical and the right timing for application
oHow to rotate and tank-mix
oBe aware of non-target pathogens
Postharvest sanitation practices and chemical control
oKnow the fungicides and the impact of application methods

MODULE 3: Fungicide Resistance: Risks and Mitigation

Fungicide resistance development and management
Definitions and principles
What are the risks? How does resistance emerge and spread?
How can I know if I have resistance in my orchard or packinghouse?
What can I do to limit or delay the development of resistance?
